President Bill Schenk took charge of his first regular meeting and questioned what secret mission Pat McKinley was now on in Hawaii. Some comments were made from the members on this. J Richey did the flag salute and Terri Grassi the invocation. Kim Barlow and Don Ludwig collaborated on a rousing Yankee Doodle Dandy (YDD) and the Rotary Smiles song. (Point of info – in the YDD song “macaroni” was the name at that time of any gentleman’s fancy clothing. Puzzled about that for years.) Bill Schenk encouraged members to help expand the club by bringing in new members.
Bill Hite welcomed many guests of members which included: Jim Williams-wife Sally Williams; Bill Heaton (not to be confused with Bill Hite)-Mike Cochran; Scott Dowds welcomed back Claude Jones; Diane Masseth-Jones-Assembly Woman Sharon Quirk- Silva and Rosamarie Gomez-Amaro; Terri Grassi – her brother Frank Appice; Tony Fabelo-Vinh; Dan Ouweleen, intern Mackenna Alvarez and his brother Fred Ouweleen; Bob Radde-wife Gloria Radde; Griff Duncan – his daughter Marilyn Gianetti; Zoot Velasco – Amanda and David Nguyen from Cal-State Fullerton Rotaract as guests of the club. Robert Jahncke Was also welcomed back from his recent shoulder replacemet surgery.
Larry Bennett is a new politician and was busy as Recognition Master to recognize almost everyone in the club. Special recognition was given to Jim Young for a two page story lauding him in the Fullerton Stories magazine. Rotary anniversaries included: Vern Andrews, Theresa Harvey, Griff Duncan, Allyn Lean, Bob Maxwell, Leslie McCarthy, Bob Muschek, Bob Sattler and Gary Swank. Sponsors of these Rotarians included: Rick Crane-Theresa Harvey; Robert Jahncke – Allyn Lean; Blake Smith – Bob Maxwell and Gary Swank; Mike Oates – Leslie McCarthy.
Bob Sattler was requested to stop using his high school graduation picture in the Roster booklet.
Rotary presidents were chided for not raising their new member totals by not inducting a member in June that made it to the next president’s total. These included Jeff Hutchinson to J Richey for Bob Maxwell and Bob Muschek; Wally Bartelt to Bill Peloquin for Leslie McCarthy; Scott Dowds to Allyn Lean for Gary Swank and Bob Sattler to Joyce Capelle for Theresa Harvey.
Birthdays and anniversaries included Brett Ackerman, spouse birthday (BD) 7/14; Bob Hathaway, his BD 7/14; Meg Crider, 2nd anniversary 7/16; Bill Peloquin, spouse Wilma 7/16; Susan Smith, her BD 7/17; Scott Dowds his BD, 7/18; Nate Kvetny, spouse BD 7/18 and Don Ludwig, BD 7/19.
Larry Bennett offered a non-defined bounty for members who locate and bring to a meeting the following non-attending members: Steve Awh, Dave Bates, Jo Brannack, Allan Bridgeford, Carl Camp, Pat Hartnett, Daniel Kang, Bill McGarvey and Rick Price.
Larry Bennett then complained that the Fullerton Observer did not have any information about Fullerton Rotary members so he could not use that material in his recognition. (My opinion is that Larry Bennett did a remarkable job of recognition without the Fullerton Observer) He should make a great politician or as Don Bankhead says a public servant.
Dan Ouweleen and Howard Minkley welcomed some members into the Paul Harris Foundation for donating $1000 or some multiple of this amount. Terri Grassi used her Paul Harris donations to bring her brother Frank Appice a Paul Harris recognition. Francis Knott and Vimal Seth were also recognized.
In announcements, Keith Mills finally gave a past presidents pin to Chuck Munson, a delay of over 30 or so years. Kim Barlow is ordering new badges so let her know if you need a new or revised badge. If you like Shakespeare, contact Kim as she has info on Pomona College theatre. Dick Daybell asked for attendees for the September 20th visit to the USS Iowa and Howard Minkley encouraged members to come to the upcoming Angels game.
Kim Barlow is offering to gather names for a Shakespeare happening in Claremont. Please cotact im for details.
An extremely entertaining program was presented by Jeff Sotzing who told of his career with the Johnny Carson Show. Jeff Sotzing is a nephew of Johnny Carson and obtained initial employment with the show as a receptionist. His training in visual arts allowed him to be responsible in later years for the video recordings of the Johnny Carson shows. He told various well received stories of the show and showed some hilarious videos of happenings on the program. Jeff Sotzing is a current director of the Muckenthaler and donates well to the organization according to Zoot Velasco. Zoot suggested that a purchase of the video package of the past Johnny Carson shows would assist in contributions to local Fullerton non-profits.
Thought for the week:
“Two are better than one, because they have a good return for their work. If one falls down, his friend can pick him up. But pity the man who falls and has no one to help him up.”
Ecclesiastes 4, verses 9 and 10
