Demotion Night - June 27, 6:00pm at the Muck

Prez Scott opened the meeting today only after greeting each member at the badge box, attaching each name badge and solemnly shaking each member’s hand. Each member, in addition, was given three raffle tickets and a toaster oven paid for by Prez Scott. After serving each table dessert and coffee, Prez Scott gave a heartfelt invocation and invited the club to follow him in pledging allegiance to our flag. Amazing everyone, Prez Scott then slid behind the piano and entertained the club with an emotional solo performance of “God Bless America”.

Introductions:

Bill Hite introduced Rotarians with guests that included Mitch Hovey who introduced valued staff members Kathy Ikola and Carmen Serna; Bill Peloquin introduced his wife Wilma, and Prez Scott introduced First Lady Jane.

Announcements:

Don Ludwig risked a fine for announcing that his daughter has a flat in London that is available the second week of the Olympics.

Jim Williams pleaded with club members to consider coming and RSVPing to next week’s Demotion Night. Also, Jim is open to any and all ideas regarding a program at said Demotion Night.

Prez Scott passed out checks to Claire McKenna and Diane Jones for the YMCA and the YWCA as part of the Community Investment Awards. Diane said the money would benefit the YWCA Scott Dowds' Program for Early Breast Cancer Screening and also the Scott Dowds' Program for At Risk Youth. Claire said the donation would be used in the YMCA Scott Dowds' After School Program.

Prez Scott reminded everybody that the regular meeting next week (June 27th) would be held at dinner time at the Muckenthaler Cultural Center instead of the Meridian Cultural Center. Scott also reminded the Club that we will be dark the Wednesday after that because of 4th of July. He then took the opportunity to profoundly thank each Fullerton Rotary Club member for their many contributions that made his tenure as club President so pleasant and enjoyable.

Recognitions:

Allyn Lean was the Recognition Master today and he recognized Warren Wimer on his birthday today. Bill Peloquin is also celebrating a birthday this week. Marilyn Richards celebrated husband Don’s birthday this week. Buck Catlin will celebrate his anniversary with Bobbie by going dancing.

Rick Price had the winning ticket but even with the help of Marty Burbank could not answer Zoot’s question accurately.

Program:

Prez Scott presented his own program and showed the club just what can be accomplished with a dedicated membership. A year in review was celebrated and at the end of his presentation Scott awarded co-Rotarians of the year awards to Bob Muschek and Leslie McCarthy-.1 Patient, Mary (509) 732-4112mmmmm

Scott closed his final meeting by inviting the combined girls Glee Club from Fullerton and Sunny Hills High Schools as well as the Girls Dance Team from Troy High School to sing “My Way” with him. At its conclusion the lights dimmed and the club sat in darkness. When the lights came on Scott had left the building. After the members silently filed out of the room and dutifully put the badges back in perfect number order they found Scott bringing around each members car as they exited. At the end there were just three Rotarians left. Scott shook Allyn Lean’s hand and wished him luck. Then loaded Ray Hansen into his helicopter and flew him home.

Rotary Care Serves Community
Theresa Harvey

Nearly 350 community members were provided health services on Saturday, June 16, 2012, through the generosity of Rotary Club of Fullerton and community healthcare providers. Services rendered, all at no charge to the clients, included dental, vision, health and breast cancer prevention services. Rotary Club of Fullerton partnered with AYUDA, Cottage Dental, Southern California College of Optometry (SCCO), St. Jude Neighborhood Health Center, YWCA of North Orange County and USC Dental School to host Rotary Care. The event was held at Richman Elementary School and served individuals throughout Orange and Los Angeles Counties.

Clients were able to receive free comprehensive vision screenings, including eyeglasses if prescribed through services of SCCO. Breast cancer screenings coordinated through the YWCA of North Orange County included breast health information and mammograms. Free dental exams and treatment were offered to more than 100 individuals through services provided through Cottage Dental, AYUDA, and community volunteers including those from USC Dental School. Finally, free medical services were provided through St. Jude Neighborhood Health Clinic and the organization’s care for the poor program.

“This was an opportunity for Rotary Club of Fullerton to give back to a community that has enriched so many of us. Rotary Care involved over 100 volunteers and professionals who donated their time and expertise to make this day a success,” explained Scott Dowds, President of Rotary Club of Fullerton. “We hope to make this an annual event and serve as a model to other communities who want to find pays to engage the community as well as to give back.”
