Prez Elect Allyn opened the meeting promptly at 12:30; with the invocation ably handled by Bob Muscek followed by the pledge of allegiance, led by Ted Kim. Song leader Nissa conducted a robust version of the God Bless America, followed by a hand shaking rendition of Smile.
Introductions by Deborah Sanchez of guests Clint Marsh, Meg Crider (Allyn), Heather Roeha (Pat McKinley), Jeremie Sulst (Julie Anderson) and Gary Swank (Blake Smith).
Prez Scott snuck in sometime during the opening stuff.
Larry Bennett discussed the upcoming Health Clinic; Leslie McCarthy advised us of a spam poacher using the name “FullertonInsurance.net” and it ain’t Fullerton Insurance, so beware. It was also announced that the estimable Joe Lins was recognized by the Fullerton Chamber of Commerce as recipient of the annual “Hawkins Business Leadership Award”.
Former Prez Jim Thompson started our Club’s sponsorship of the Fullerton High School Tri-School Track Meet a mere 21 years ago. It is a highlight of the year for all participants, whether they be high school athletes or Rotarians flipping burgers and handing out T-Shirts. Rick Crane presided as the three high schools, represented by their longtime coaches and the athletes honored us with their attendance. Special accolades went to Troy HS Coach Jim Burton, retiring after 21 years. He recognized Amy Hines, for the third consecutive year as the female hero of their team together with Trevor Fisher, who prevailed in four events. Coach Mike Schade of Sunny Hills recognized his two outstanding competitors, Mitchell Taw and Michelle Jackson. Greg Nordstrom, coach at Fullerton Union High School, reminisced about receiving a plaque from our Rotary as Fullerton high school athlete of the year, some 45 years ago. He eloquently expressed sincere appreciation that he and all of the athletes have for the support provided by the Rotary Club of Fullerton to the three high school programs at the annual track meet. He presented awards to two four event stars: Hannah Guthrow and Miguel Leon.
Recognition Squire of the Day, Pat Hartnett, started off by recognizing the dedicated board members that have contributed to the lack of quorums the last two board of directors meetings. The mere sum of five dollars for all non-attendees. April 15th is a day Terri will always remember, not because taxes are due, but because George popped the question. Based on the warm smile I witnessed at her table, George got an enthusiastic affirmative response. Next, the hand of the law fell heavily on Leslie McCarthy for infringing upon Cappelle’s honorific appellation of “Princess”. Five dollars to Leslie for trade name infringement. However due to a routine convolution of law, Capt. Daybell received the honor of paying Leslie's recognition fee. Recognition of two dollars each went to all tax preparers present, with special recognitions to Deacon J and Mike Oates for apparently avoiding tax levies completely. Patrick went on to recognize Bill Schenk for 29 years of marriage +7 of courtship; Matt Apodaca’s 28th birthday; Mark Mc Gee and Steve Awh for birthdays in absentia, Pastor Greg for Roxie's birthday, with a further nod to Greg for starting the tradition of Smile shaking of hands. The 77-year-old Nate Kvetny, who is also celebrating 20 years as a member, said something about retiring from Rotary, joining the Secret Service and attending an upcoming one-week retreat for comedians. We all hope that Nate has another 20 years as a member of THE Rotary Club of Fullerton, a Secret Service assignment to Columbia, and a lot of new good jokes from the retreat.

Astutely avoiding embarrassment, the owner of the first raffle ticket picked never revealed himself/herself. The owner of the second ticket picked was Andy Anderson. He did not select Busty Girls on the Beach, hence he lost. You had to be there
Today's program was introduced by Bob Muscek as a follow on to presentations that we had from our own members, Sally Gach and Judy Fancher, about Fullerton Union High School and Sunny Hills High School respectively. Bob introduced Principals Maggie Buchan of Troy High School and Sally Layana of La Vista and La Sierra High Schools. Both of these accomplished professionals gave informative presentations. Ms. Layana, as Principal of the La Vista and La Sierra High Schools has the challenge of providing education to young people that are not always that interested in education, and to those that have challenges to overcome even if they are interested in furthering their education. La Vista High School, set up for students 16 or over, is a continuation high school that focuses on serving 600 at risk students. It has a magnificent new campus built at a cost of $34 million, not one dime of which came from local taxpayer levies. It is a model continuation school for the Country, with a state-of-the-art fitness room, a childcare center with a full-time nurse, leadership programs, a program specifically designed to identify students that would benefit from academic programs geared to entry into community colleges and programs coordinated with ROP for vocational training in many different fields. The school also has an adult transitional program designed to serve young people 18 to 22 years old. Estimates are that the two schools combined prevent approximately 500 dropouts per year while providing a structured and responsible work ethic for students that are not focused on university acceptance. Next, Ms. Buchan, with an impressive PowerPoint presentation gave us a complete rundown on the achievements of Troy High School students. Well known for its magnet programs, including the Troy Tech and Science Olympiad programs recognized across the country, Ms. Buchan emphasized that Troy is also a traditional neighborhood school, with a total enrollment of 2600 students. Approximately half of Troy’s students enrolled through traditional channels and half through the magnet school admission procedure. Some amazing statistics: 98% of the Troy graduates matriculate into college programs; 2400 of the student body take the advanced placement tests, with a 94% pass rate; 54 National Merit Scholars, a 100% pass rate for the 67 International Baccalaureate candidates...
Both Ms. Buchan and Ms. Layana were impressive in both personage and presentation. Each conveyed to our club valuable information about their respective schools.
