4 Weeks & Counting to the Golden Heifer Awards Night
June 29, 2011, at the Muck - see Jim Williams

Our fearless “short timing” President J called the meeting to order at precisely 12:23.32 p.m.  This was following his strapping on the Feed Bag and passing through the chow line consisting of a Summer Salad with oranges and walnuts with a light vinaigrette dressing accompanied with garlic bread, chicken and spinach stuffed into large pasta and a wonderful assortment of fresh fruit including fresh cherries!  The cupcakes were amazing!

Lee Brockett took over the micro-phone and did a fantastic job with the invocation and then took further charge and led us in the Pledge of Allegiance to our Country’s Flag.  Outstanding!

Pastor Gregory brought everyone to life with This is My Country.  You can hear it now; This is my Country, Land of my birth; This is my Country, Grandest on earth!  I pledge thee my allegiance, America, the bold; For this is my Country, to have and to hold!  And you know what’s next; a rousing rendition of SMILE!

Randy McFarland was in charge of introducing our guests.  Our special visiting Rotarian was Ojwal and Neeta Kakaria whose club runs a 200 bed hospital!  Susan Warner was the guest of Dianne Masseth-JonesPat Hartnett introduced Don Ware, a Realtor and volunteer basketball coach.  Matt Apodaca was the guest of an absent Scott Dowds and our dapper President J Richie introduced his lovely bride Rose Marie.

If you are interested in becoming a Recognition Master for our club, please see Dick Daybell.

We had a few announcements beginning with Jim Williams.  As he was walking in someone commented on how much they enjoy the fellowship in the middle of the week.  I think it’s something we all look forward to.  Jim informed us that we are all invited to DEMOTION NIGHT on June 29 at the Muckenthaler Cultural Center beginning at 6:00.  The flyer says it will be benefiting Heifer International but I think it will benefit J the most!  Leslie McCarthy thanked all the participants who assisted in the Top 100 banquets the past few weeks.  Dick Daybell is looking for members who would like to be Recognition Masters, give Dick a call now!  Patrick Hartnet reminded us of the National Rotary Fund and our responsibility to support it and the August 20 End Polio Night at Angel Stadium with a Chili Cookoff before the game.  If you can cook chili let Pat know and we can get into that gastronomical contest!  Warren Wimer let us know that the Fullerton Foundation Meeting will be immediately following next week’s meeting.  HELP WANTED: If you or anyone you know would like to volunteer to be a part of the Rotagram Pool, about once per quarter, contact Bill Schenk at bill.fhc@sbcglobal.net.

Bob Hillhouse did a complete job as Recognition Master beginning with John Phelps and what he did for Kerry on her birthday May 30.  All he got from John was that it was a marvelous day!  Bob missed the fine and Dan Kiernan started in on that and got hit for $3.  Our very own Dr. Jim Young celebrated his 90th birthday also on May 30!  No fine for Jim but everyone at the table had to chip in $1 each.  Next on the block was Bernie Dunlap who is celebrating his 68th birthday this Friday the 3rd,  that cost him $3.  Pat McKinley was reminded of his anniversary on Saturday the 4th with his lovely bride Barbara!  Meanwhile, Pastor Greg Hickman was stalking the crowd with that huge net collecting all the “recognition” money!  Debbie Napolin was fined $5 for piping up when Bob was looking for Andy Anderson.  She was only trying to give Bob a hand by letting him know what a devoted husband Andy is.  Well, that cost her $5!  J “I’m outta here” Richey, Bob Radde and Chris Meyer were nailed for $2 and their respective tables were also nabbed for $1 each!  Randy McFarland was fined $3 for not using his turn signal in the parking lot and Fred Johnson is our next President.  Dan Kiernan’s table was fined $1 per person to pay for Dan’s relentless bragging on being the top money raiser in the club.  Leslie McCarthy was thanked for her hard work toward the Top 100.  And finally, is there any reason NOT to fine Ken Kaisch $5?  Somehow Allyn Lean got caught up in the foray and had to cough up $5!  And that’s it for this week, finally!

New Member - Lois Bergman, transferring from Orange; Lois works at Fullerton Community Bank.

DRAWING:  DING, DING, DING!!!  And, the lucky number was……..805661.  Where’s Jim Blackburn when you need him?  Patrick Hartnet was the winner.  The sports question was; who holds the record for most free throws in a NBA final series?  You will find the answer at the end of this monolog.

Our program today was two craft talks.  Bob Clark did the introductions of Nissa Foster and Kim Barlow in that order.

Nissa Foster
Nissa started with her uncommon name which means “tiny little elf or brownie snuggled in her mother’s arms”.  She was born in Arcata in 1974.  Her father was an upholsterer and Mom stayed home.  Her youth was far from boring as the memories of disco’s, belly dancers and music are her fond memories.  Her parents rented out attic space to a family friend who was a real live clown!  It worked out great because she always had a clown at her birthday parties.
Nissa loves music and upon graduation from high school the US ARMY recruiters showed up at her band class.  They said that she could be a paid musician if she joined the ARMY band.  One week after graduation with a signed waiver from her parents, as she was just 17, (remember that song?) she was off to basic training at Ft. Jackson South Carolina!  She was discharged in 2000, got married and started a family.  She graduated from Oregon State in liberal arts and walked for graduation at eight months pregnant!
She began teaching at a Montessori School and added teaching group piano lesions after school.  She then moved to Fullerton and met a guy named Joe in a laundry mat and the rest is history.  He is in charge of the family life and handles the daily running and delivering of the family to their events.
While networking at the Fullerton Chamber of Commerce she met Chuck Allen and Tony Florentine with the Fullerton College Foundation.  She has been the business development manager for a few years now and just loves her job.  Part of her responsibilities is to encourage college students by helping them obtain scholarships and improving the community awareness of Fullerton College and its Foundation.
Nissa is a busy person as she just finished her first year at Western State University College of Law with 3 more years to go.  She is looking forward to marrying Joe this summer in Oregon on August 13.  In her spare time she is a singing Notary Public.  She loves to sing and as Bob Clark said while introducing her, even he sounded better singing standing next to her.  Her father is a long time Rotarian and she is honored to carry on with something that has been so important to him.   Nice job Nissa!
Kim Barlow
Kim Barlow started off her craft talk thanking The Club for their thoughts and prayers as her shoulder surgery went very well.  Kim was number 3 in a family where her mom turned 20 the day after she was born and a dad who was 19.  The two of them met at Anaheim High School and were married shortly after graduation.  She grew up in Las Vegas and to this day still loves the desert.  While growing up she had lots of plenty and wants.  Her youngest sister was born when Kim was ten years old and remembers how excited she was on that day.
She was a very shy girl (hard to believe) with very think glasses and brainy too.  While growing up she started taking dance lessons at four years old and enjoyed that a lot.  Her Grandparents were the “best”!  Oh how she loved it when her Grandmother would bring her a warm towel fresh out of the dryer when she would get out of the bath!  They were self taught through reading and this is where Kim began her love of books.  While wandering through the library she discovered the section on women’s biographies and read each one then moved on to the men’s biographies.
When she was 12 she moved to Norco and had horses.  They lived close to the Santa Ana River and spent many hours with her friends growing up and having great times.  After 4 years in Norco they moved on to Shady Cove in Oregon where the school bus would pick her up at 5 a.m. because the school was shared with lower grades and they all split time.

Kim has wanted to be a Lawyer since she was 12.  As the Valedictorian of her High School Graduation she was able to earn a full scholarship to UCLA.  She lived in Fullerton at the time and commuted because housing was not provided because she lived so close to campus.  She dropped out to support her fiancé while working at Carl’s jr. at the 91 and Harbor.  She was also working in a law office full time and came to her senses and ended the relationship.  (Her words, not mine!)  She then went back to school full time at night continuing her work during the day!

It was at a professor’s party that she met her future husband at 23, got married and completed her undergraduate degree as an English Major while 7 months pregnant!  She worked for a wonderful employer who allowed her to bring her son to work each day.  While continuing this incredible schedule she scored in the top 1% of her pre-law placement test and was invited to study at Harvard!  That just happened to be beyond the budget and she went back to UCLA Law School and was 4th in her class after year one and finished 3rd at the end!
She had the honor of clerking for Judge Ferdinand Fernandez, was pregnant with twins upon graduation and while taking the bar exam.  She was too sick to take the bare review so she would lie on the couch, listen to the tapes, sleep, and do it all over again.  She taught Law at UCLA for a few years and went to work with Dick Jones when it was just the two of them.
While this would be more than enough for most people she then started a band with her husband.  She knows that family is most important as she ended her 25 year marriage in 2009.  Kim doesn’t wish that on anyone but is so proud to be a Rotarian as our values are her values.  Her parting shot was that she can’t wait to find out what she will be when she grows up!  Charge On Kim.

The answer to today’s trivia question was Duane Wade with 21 free throws!

Our esteemed President J adjourned the meeting at 1:36.31
