Volume 70, Issue 28 Rota-Scribe: Bill Schenk

Marty Burbank gave an invocation and Pat McKinley led the pledge of allegiance.  Prez J welcomed back Fullerton Rotary Song Leader Emeritus Leroy Fulton back to the microphone where he explained the significance of his “first song” selection, the tune nobody seems to know the real name of, but we all know as “My Country ‘tis of Thee”; followed by a rousing chorus of “Smile”.

Randy McFarland introduced Rotarians with guests that included: Mark Geiss (Meridian Sports Club Membership coordinator and Personal Trainer Kevin Jameson); Sandy Hayes (long time friend and frequent visitor Eric Neilson); Bob Radde (old friend and UCLA grad Harvey Valley); and Irene Lang (Colleague Allen Broyless and visiting Professor Jurita Vizgirdaite).

Princess Joyce Capelle was crowned Recognition Mistress today and recognized all Ford owners on the anniversary of Henry Ford’s land speed record of 37 miles per hour.  (Les McCarthy admitted that her Mustang can do that in first gear.)  Les was fined two dollars as a reminder of the speed limit in the City of Fullerton).

Joyce also fined Theresa Harvey, John Derry, Gary Goodson, and Keith Mills for their spouse’s birthdays.  Dick Daybell was fined for his birthday.  Cathy Gach levied a fine on herself to commemorate her son’s recent engagement.

Bob Radde called the winning number and race queen Les McCarthy was a winner when she correctly guessed which cross town rival the USC Basketball team beat last week-end. (Its initials were U.C.L.A.)

Deacon Jay finished his program on U.S. Presidents today.   He began with Theodore Roosevelt and ended with George Bush the 43rd.  Much was learned from his amusing anecdotes.

Prez J thanked all the guests for their attendance and then gave a special recognition for Mike Oates.  Mike was responsible for partnering our club with our Yong-in, Korea sister club to develop a matching grant for the Muckentahler Cultural Center.  Again, the ability of using Rotary International and our sister club in Korea and the good old word “Leverage”.  An investment of $700 from our club, help from Shingal Rotary Club, and the matching funds by RI and you have $16,000.  It will go for international cultural classes for elementary school kids.

Prez J ended the meeting with a quote from C.S. Lewis:  “You are never too old to set another goal or dream a new dream”
