Volume 66, Issue 46 Rota-Scribe: Joe Lins

President Terri opened the meeting at precisely 12:00pm welcoming a packed house.

Pledge:        Rick Price could not find a flag so asked that we all look out the window and imagine a flag blowing.  The words came out loud and clear.

Invocation:   Leroy Fulton gave the invocation.  We spent a moment in quiet prayer for the passing of Les Christensen’s wife Nancy.  He also reminded us of the upcoming holiday and how it began as a tribute to the fallen soldiers from the Civil War and evolving to what it is today.  A tribute to all who gave their lives defending our country.

Guests:        Theresa Harvey did a wonderful job of introducing the roomful of guests.  Leroy got a jump on her during the invocation with his introduction of John Rowe who is celebrating 40 years at the University.  John brought his wife Catherine who runs the Heirloom Shop in town.  Leroy let us know that $750,000 has been donated to the University from the proceeds of sales!  Paul Dudley introduced Jon Wagner from the Fox Theater Foundation.  Warren Wimer brought John Davies.  The Williams family was well represented.  Jim introduced his son Michael, mother-in-law Betty Andrews, his wife Sally and Blake Smith.  Daniel Kang brought Steve Awh while Cameron McCune brought his Boss, Hilda Sugarman who let us know that Cameron will be looking for a job when his retirement begins next month.  Michael La proudly introduced his wife Kristi who is assisting him in his real estate business.  Kathy Allred introduced Carlos Leija.  Ed Atkinson proudly introduced Sunny Hills High School RYLA students Randy Huanl, Eryca Lim and Alison Wu.  Last but not least Andy Ersek a business consultant from the Orange North Club came by to check out Fullerton Main.

Announcements:    Not enough time to make the line up so Paul Dudley let me know about the 4th Annual Hollywood in Fullerton on June 9, 2007.  Save the date for more fabulous details to come.  Cameron McCune reminded us of a Night of Wine and Roses on Saturday June 2 at the Fullerton Arboretum.  Designed to be a spectacular evening of fabulous food, fine wine, live and silent auctions to benefit students in FullertonPrez Terri needs help picking up picture frames and filling them with the awards for next weeks top 100 at FHS.

Programs:    Jim Young presented a new member to the Rotary Family in Michael Williams, Jim’s son.  Michael was born into Rotary and has shown leadership skills throughout his life.  He just returned from Barcelona Spain where he spent a semester studying abroad.  He is returning to the Business School at CSUF and we are depending on his leadership skills to revitalize the ROTARACT Club at CSUF.  Welcome and good luck Michael.

Next Up:      Ed Atkinson, Principal at SHHS introduced RYLA students Randy Huanl, Eryca Lim and Alison Wu who let us know about the experiences they had on their weekend.  Teamwork and leadership skills were perfected.  They liked the Boojun institute where they were challenged by choice to conquer their fears overcoming their fear of heights.  We learned that wristbands were very important as without them they were not fed, interesting concept.  They all agreed that it was a life changing event.  (For those who do not know what RYLA means - Rotary Youth Leadership Awards - a Rotary sponsored youth program.)

Program for May 30 - Medical Malpractice Insurance Problems by Dr. Stewart Shanfield
Program for June 6 - Program for May 30 - Medical Malpractice Insurance Problems by Dr. Stewart Shanfield

Thanks:       Both Ed Atkinson and Terri thanked all who participated in the top 100 event last night.  Don’t forget about he next one for Fullerton High School next week.

Next up:       The director of Recognition, Warren Wimer jokingly gave thanks to Jim Williams who provided the booze for the previous event and why the Chief didn’t know nor wanted to and what Phil Silverman was going to do about it.  A $25 fine was assessed for the bad joke.  Cathy Gach was nabbed for her 19th anniversary, congratulations.  Not sure why Ray Ashcroft was fined $25, but I do know it had something to do with who introduced him to the club.  Dan Fisk, Bill Gorman and Dick Jones avoided the toll for the same reason, they weren’t there!  Scott Dowds was fined for not knowing what Bob Satler, Bill Kincade, Bill Mathey, Joyce Capelle and Tom Meyer had in common, these fine folks are members of the our Rotary Foundation and are responsible for how the money is spent.  Rick Price hit a grand slam for no flag during the salute and must pay $25.  Lastly Warren fined himself $50 for his office move to Newport Beach but will remain in the club.

Drawing:      Howard Wood got the call and promptly picked the remaining Joker for $100 prize.

Official Program:   Tom Meyer sucked up to Dr. Stuewart Shanfield during his introduction letting us know that he is the bested dressed MD in OC for the past 2 years.  Hardly true, I do believe it has been longer than that!  Dr. Shanfield has been practicing Orthopaedic Surgery for more than 20 years in Fullerton.  He is ranked in the top 2% in California and is Tops as far as this writer is concerned.  Tom is proud to have Dr. Shanfield as his neighbor.  Dr. Shanfield’s presentation was titled “The Evaluation of Risk Protection for Patients and Physicians”.  He taught us about the United States History that in the early 1800’s there was little if any medical litigation.  There was no licensing and little education.  Things abruptly changed in the 1840’s where Religious Fatalism/perfection came into play with rising expectations and advertisements.  The East Coast began formal training which created competition between the amateur hacks and the trained physicians.  The lawyers came on and focused their efforts on the trained physicians.  This fueled the perpetuation and expansion of medical malpractice.  Uniform Standards became so important that a physician better have good reason to deviate from those standards if a problem did come about.  He pointed out that citizen juries, the root of our judicial system, doesn’t necessarily work as they are not knowledgable in the area of medicine.  In the early 1900’s malpractice soared and it reached a breaking point in the 70’s and 80’s.  Gov. Jerry Brown introduced MICRA which set a limit of $250,000 for pain and suffering, limited contingency fees, ensured compensation for economic damages, a statute of limitations, the advance notice of a claim and arbitration just to name a few.  Has MICRA worked?  Dr. Shanfield says yes as jury awards have not been stalled, premiums are steady and innovation is continueing.  Dr. Shanfield closed by stating that patient safety should be the centerpiece of medical reform and when patients are harmed it msut be addressed immediately by all.

Closing Thought:   The Constitution only gives people the right to happiness, it’s up to you to catch it.
