Volume 66, Issue 4 Rota-Scribe: Leslie McCarthy

Dick Glaus opened our meeting by leading us in the Pledge to our great country.  Howard Wood, accompanied by Don Ludwig reminded us (as if we needed it) that we are square in the middle of “Our Good Old Summertime.”  And, Carl Camp led us in a prayer asking for the impossible – a literate Fullerton Rotary Club.

Guests:

Guests this week included many of our better halves as introduced by Dan Kiernan.  They were Barbara Levine, Pat Soderquist, Ann Mills.  Also guests of our club were Brenna Kelly and Lanny Corvillon.  Welcome to all!

Announcements:

8/9/06  OUR MEETING IS MOVING FOR THE DAY!  We will gather at CSUF’s Garden Café with the program to be a tour of the new performing arts center by Jerry Samuelson, Dean of the College of the Arts.  Park in the Nutwood Parking Structure.  Enter from St. College and Arts Drive.  The performing arts center will be straight ahead and slightly to the left.   The Garden Café is past the Arts Center towards the Tutan Student Union.  At the end, turn left on the walkway to the blue post on the right which marks the stairs down to the Café.  An elevator is available in the Titan Student Union and signage will also guide you.  An Attendant will give you a complimentary parking pass at the Nutwood structure.  There is no handicap parking near the lunch site.  You may drop off people by entering from St. College and Dorothy Lane.  Veer right to the dead-end and drop them off in front of the blue post.   Then you need to exit and reenter into the Nutwood Structure.  Whew!  I’m lost without leaving my seat!

· 9/16  YMCA Crab Feast – See Rick Price for Tickets

· March 2007  Frank Kawase is looking for members and a leader for the gathering in the Phillipines.  Frank, we might be able to supply a leader, but after looking around the room you aren’t going to get any young professional members between the ages of 24-40 unless we all start lying about our age.  Oops against the 4-Way Test!

· Whittier Club will be sponsoring a luncheon with Richard King speaking.  I am sorry, but this editor missed the date as she was still laughing too hard about finding a YOUNG professional in our group.

· And, a word of warning from Bill Klinghofer:  “Don’t open any emails regarding hanging unless you want to condemn your computer.

Jim Young presented Pat Soderquist with the Paul Harris Award on behalf of Ron.  As Pat stated, Ron truly exemplified Service Before Self.  One of his favorite sayings was, “I never saw a Brinks truck following a hearse down the street!”  And, forewarned that no good awardee goes unpunished, Pat brought her piggy bank in anticipation of the resulting fine.

Finemaster Bill Mathy assigned the largest fine of the new year today.  After recognizing Dick Glaus, Ed Little, Jay Kraemer and Cameron McCune  and their wives for birthdays and anniversaries, he hammered Bill Klinghoffer $490 for receiving a $500 grant for recorders.  I think Bill must have a real hatred for recorder music.  He also mentioned that Bill McGarvey donated chimes to CSUF (hatred for all music Bill?).  He recognized Minard for his work with the American Cancer Society and Jay Ritchey as “Mr. Monopoly.”  Dick Daybell was excused from a fine for catching 14 Dorado yesterday because he was generous enough to take Diane Masseth-Jones’ son out.  My question Bill was why not only did you waive the fine, but did not report Dick to Fish and Game for going over his limit?

A final recognition was for Nate Kvetney as Peacemaker for our club.  We were all grateful that Nate made it back safely from Israel and felt that he was a great representative of our club.  That was until the debate over Jim William’s $100 ensued with Nate being at the center of the controversy.  Thank you also to Dick Daybell for collecting the books and delivering them for “Reading by 9” effort.

The Raffle was won by Bill Hite for correctly providing the state where the Baseball Hall of Fame is located.  President Terri, multiple choice…?

Program:  A Grandmother Who Resolved to Learn to Read.  Chris from Orange County Read in Santa Ana presented a program about literacy.  Some interesting facts were cited:

  • One in five adults in the US doesn’t have first grade reading skills (yes that includes ESL)
  • You can tutor them through programs available with local libraries and it only amounts to about 4 hours a month commitment time
  • Learning to read at a young age is much easier than bluffing your way through life
  • To get out of prison you must have a 9th grade reading level.  To get into UCLA you need a 7th grade reading level (Did I get that right?)

Minard Duncan has copies of brochures if you would like additional information.

Closing thought by President Terri:  We are given two hands, one to help yourself and the second to help others.
