Opening Meeting:

Rotary Club of Fullerton President Terri Grassi convened the first meeting of the year and asked Buck Catlin to lead us in the pledge.  Bill Peloquin (past District Governor) acted as song leader with the assistance of Jim Young, Leroy Fulton, and golden throated Randy McFarlandDon Ludwig took a brief leave of absence from his Club Treasure’s job to provide piano accompaniment.

Leroy Fulton provided the invocation.

Randy McFarland introduced guests that included Ed Hart (General Manager of the Fullerton Flyers); Rebecca Howard (prospective new member and Director of North Orange County Boy Scouts of America), and Scott Smith (Guest of Prez Terri).

Prez Terri took a few minutes to thank the club for sponsoring her trip to the Rotary International Convention in Denmark/Sweden last month.  Terri reported that among the many activities she participated in she posted our club banner at the convention and visited a Danish Rotary Club in the suburb of Tastarub and presented its banner to our club. Prez Terri reported that there were 14000 Rotarians in attendance from 140 countries. 

In the interest of RI President Bill Boyd who has adopted the model “Lead the Way” in literacy, Prez Terri announced that next week will kick off the “Reading by Nine” book collection program.  Fullerton Rotarians are asked to donate new or used children’s books for distribution in local elementary schools. This program will be ongoing.

Prez Terri also thanked all members who helped with the last week’s demotion festivities for departing president Joyce CappellePrez Terri especially thanked Sally Williams and Sandy Hayes for their heavenly design and decorations.

Jim McKamy announced a Club Poker Tournament next week (July 14th).

Dick Daybell announced that fellowship lunches would resume this summer.

Rick Crane announced Fullerton Rotary Day at the Fullerton Flyers Baseball on July 30.

Recognition Master Lee Myhre recognized Claude Jones, Don Bankhead, and Michael La for their recent Birthdays.  Spousal Birthdays included Arise Kim (Shine), Linda Meyer (Tom), Barbara Andrews (Vern), Peggy Swatkowski (Wally), Karen Dudley (Paul) and Frank Stoobant (Glenda).

   Harry and Helen Brown, Rick and Gale Price, Duncan and Carolyn Johnson, and Dale and Martha Schumacher were all recognized for anniversaries.

Cathy Gach was recognized for new granddaughter Kalie Rose was 21 inches and 8 lbs.

Bob Radde had the winning ticked and collected 40 bucks for knowing what year the Fourth of July became a Federal Holiday (1941).

Geoff Spalding introduced Fullerton Flyer Manger and former Major Leaguer Gary Templeton.  Gary was originally drafted by the St. Louis Cardinals where he played for 9 years before being traded to the San Diego Padres.  He later became associated with the Anaheim Angel organization.  Gary spoke of the Fullerton Flyers and the new independent professional baseball league.  Gary fielded questions about the Fullerton Flyers, the league, and his long and distinguished career in professional baseball. Gary cited Lou Brock as his favorite and most influential teammate.
