Volume 65, Issue 36 Rota-Scribe: Bill Schenk

After Scott Dowds began the pledge of allegiance and Howard Wood led the Fullerton Rotary Alfalfa Chorus in a beautiful rendition of “When Irish Eyes are Smiling”.

Carl Camp preceded the invocation with facts about St. Patrick’s missionary work.

Vern Andrews introduced visiting Rotarians that mysteriously included Bill Heaton whose make-up card must have been mixed in with visitors.  The Club gave Bill a warm reception, regardless. Esther Hull and Alice Jarminski also visited from Anaheim Rotary.  Bob Radde introduced his friend Bruce Murdock as his guest today. Dick Glaus also introduced his neighbor Alan Perry.

Announcements

Echoes of Randy McFarland reverberated through lunch as we were reminded to submit reports for District Awards.

Diane Jones announced that the YWCA would present a Photo Essay by award winning photographer Nancy Hoan Le of Women in Viet Nam.

Rick Crane is accepting sign-ups for Rotary Day at Cal State Fullerton Baseball on April 2.

Walt Barnes will be gone all week to celebrate his grandson’s first birthday but announced that Rotary Foundation Raffle tickets and monies can be turned in to Frank Kawase in his absence.

New Rotarian Induction.

Jim Young began the induction ceremony by telling a poignant story of a “Rotary Miracle” before Pastor Greg Hickman was inducted.  Greg was sponsored by J Ritchy and is a previous member of three other Rotary Clubs and has served them well including being a past Rotary Club President.

Recognitions:

Jim Williams introduced today’s recognition master who has never needed a microphone to be heard; master showman Griff Duncan. Griff emceed an American Idol spin-off called Rotary Idol.  Griff introduced judges Scott Dowds, Bob Jahncke, and comedian emeritus Mike Oates.

Recognitions - continued . . .

Contestants included Bob Engemann who is celebrating wife Joann’s birthday.  Bob demonstrated his amazing ability to sing old Navy shantys on demand and received a perfect “10” for his efforts.

Prez Joyce was recognized for being named one of the  25 most influential Women of Orange County Magazine.  Her talent, of course, was ethnic humor, and she, too was awarded a perfect “10” for her sensitive narrative of a touching story of two Irish siblings.

Diane Masseth-Jones was also recognized for her appearance in the  25 most influential women and she recited from Shakespeare and scored 100% of Griff Duncan’s grueling Bard trivia exam.

Ray Hansen is celebrating he and Nancy’s 50th anniversary on St. Patrick’s day and reprised “When Irish Eye’s are smiling”.  Ray also received a “10” for his effort.

Shine Kim will celebrate his 2nd anniversary with wife Arise and sang a song celebrating Jesus, Arise, and Shine.   Perfect “10”.

Dick Glaus won the Raffle and had the correct answer and walked off with the $40 prize.

St. Paddy's Day Joke-off

In lieu of a “real” program there was a joke-off (no typo, it really was a joke-off), between Pat McKinely and Jack Hayes.

Pat told another lame Mike Oates joke, while Jack did twenty minutes without a drummer (ac’pella).

While Pat conceded ten minutes into Jack’s routine a vote by applause was taken.  Since my hearing aid battery went dead just then, I am unable to report who won.

Don’t drink and drive.

Happy St. Paddy’ Day!
