Meeting Notes and Club News

Wednesday, May 30, 2001 * written and reported by Chris Hunt *  Volume 60, #45

The meeting got off to a brisk start with Greg Franklin leading all in the flag salute. Next up were "My Country 'Tis of Thee" and "Smile" along with the musical stylings of Mike Oates on piano and, vocally, Jim Young, Bob Savage and Bill Peloquin, led by a very animated Jim Blackburn. Lee Myhre provided the Thought for the Day with his thoughts on Memorial Day. Lee told us of Buck Catlin's commendation from General DeGraff for the Memorial Day services held at Loma Vista. He also told the story of his wife Jackie's brother who lost his life on his first flight over the Adirondac Sea during WWII and concluded by reminding us of all the folks who served on the homefront.

Bob Savage announced this week's Visiting Rotarians and Guests. We welcomed Past District Governor Cliff Nelson from Orange and Louis Koff from Fullerton Sunrise. It was a family affair for Jim Young with his wonderful wife Dottie, daughter Vicky and grandson Scott (on his way to ROTC training in Rhode Island). Wally Swatkowski played host to Jim Thompson's guest, Leslie McCarthy. Julie Kemp brought new-to-the-area attorney, Linda Rehm, Terri Grassi hosted Amy Kluth, Paul Dudley introduced his son, Ryan and Ronnie Hewett sat up front with prospective member, James Ko.

A Cry For Help!! On June 24th and 25th, we have 48 Rotary Exchange kids coming to town who need places to stay. If we don't find homes for them all, we will have to pay for hotel rooms. So, if you have a spare bed, contact Mike Oates ASAP we are drastically short on host families.

District Conference "Come Fly With Me" - Friday, Saturday and Sunday (June 1-3) Stop by and see Bob McNutt's plane turned into a bar. Governor's Ball is on Saturday night.

Meeting on Wednesday, June 6 is at the Arboretum. Do not go to the Elks Lodge-all you will find there is a note on the door. A Club Picture will be taken so look spiffy!!

Did ya know that after July 1st, attendance at district events will count as a make-up?

Greg Franklin invited us to the Jr. High Instrumental Music program on Monday, June 11th, 7 p.m. at Plummer. Our club sponsors the event and it would be great if some of us could be there to support the kids.

A $2,000 check was presented to Meals on Wheels. Accepting the gift were Eileen Young and Russ Holden. To date, Meals on Wheels has served over 920,000 meals and looks forward to serving meal number 1,000,000 next year. 93 people receive meals each day prepared by the kitchens at Morningside, St. Jude and the Senior Center.

Don't forget to check out our cool new website www.fullertonrotary.org Kudos to webmaster Jahncke!

The end is near….for Prez Wally! Mark Wednesday, June 27th on your calendar. It's Demotion Night at the Crowne Plaza Hotel.

The Mike Oates Announcement-of-the-Week was regarding the Sister City trip to Fukui, Japan in October. Visit Fullerton South next week to learn more.

Soon-to-be-Past Prez Wally bestowed the Rotarian of the Week honors on that wild and crazy Russian who so gamely steps into the role of Recognition Master in Blackburn's absence, Ken Kaisch.

Jim was in town this week and promptly levied reminder fees on John Phelps, and Frank Kawase for the spouse's birthdays. Chief Pat McKinley and Barbara Ann celebrate 12 years of marriage this week and Chung Lee thanked the Finemaster, yet again, for the reminder of her 31-year anniversary to James. Jeff Hutchison paid up for his 47th birthday and for a photo of he and his daughter at the Top 100. Frank Kawase paid up for retiring from the grocery biz after 18 years. Finishing up, Sargent Major Blackburn fined all the non-veterans and then recognized all who served their country in military service.

Wally came up with a question regarding where the famous quote, "Don't Give Up the Ship" was uttered. Griff Duncan guessed Lake Eerie but per Wally it was given birth at Boston Harbor. Wally says he finds these questions on the Internet…

If you missed this week's program, you really missed something. In honor of Memorial Day, Buck Catlin outdid himself with a retrospective honoring all our club's veterans. The program included a slide show that mixed photos from the different time periods and some wonderful personal photos of "our boys" from way back when. Those fresh shining handsome faces (and the facial hair!) Buck took us back to World War I. Recently deceased Fullerton Rotarian, Harold McCabe was a pilot during that war. Our vets who served in World War II: Marines Al Triay and Don Mlodzik, Lee Myhre - Army and Jim Young, Don Bankhead, Bill McGarvey, Les Christensen, Harry Brown and Buck Catlin - all Navy. Serving in the Korean War: Wally Swatkowski - Army and Navy men, Bob Clark, Sr. and Bob McNutt. Our Vietnam vets: Dr. Dick Jones - Air Force, Bill Peloquin and Jim Thompson - Navy, and Bill Schenk and Jim Blackburn - Army. This special program left us with the message that no matter the task or the assignment, heroic or routine, they responded to the needs of their country and were willing to put their lives on the line if duty demanded it.

Where's the meeting next week????

AT THE ARBORETUM!!!!
