Meeting Notes and Club News
Wednesday, May 16, 2001 written and reported by Art Levine Volume 60, Issue 42

Don Bankhead led us in the Pledge of Allegiance without relinquishing his spot nearest the lunch line! Hope you could see the flag from there, Don! In Mike Oates's absence, Don Ludwig provided musical accompaniment for Leroy Fulton, Ray Ashcroft, Bob Savage, Bill Peloquin, and Jim Young, who collectively led us in America the Beautiful and Smile. Bob Savage especially gets a "kick" out of singing, and all Rotarians are advised to stand well clear when Bob proves it!

Dean Heiser provided the Thought of the Day, reminding us that Rotary serves as a kind of "Main Entrance" to many of life's benefits.

Chris Fraschetti introduced visitors and guests. Bernie Dunlap visited from the Brea club. Lee Brockett introduced his guest, Steve Smith from Fullerton/La Habra Boy Scouts. Ron Cooper (not shy but definitely retiring) introduced Assistant School Superintendent Dr. Patricia Godfrey. Amy Kluth of Western State University College of Law (one of your reporter's alma maters) was again present, and Bob McNutt reintroduced Muckenthaler Director Pat House.

Prez Wally reminded us that homes are still needed to house visiting exchange students June 24-25. The Rotary District Conference will take place June 1-3 at the Hyatt Newporter, with the hospitality night on the 1st and the Governor's Ball Saturday night. All are welcome.

IMPORTANT!

THE JUNE 6TH MEETING WILL TAKE PLACE AT THE FULLERTON ARBORETUM, NOT AT THE ELK'S CLUB. Wally suggested that all who wish should come "spruced up" for the Club photo to be taken that day.

Bob McNutt reminded us of this weekend's Muckenthaler cruise (Saturday - free) and car show (Sunday, only $8). "Movie Madness" will occur on Thursday and Friday.

Chris Hunt reported on her attendance at the District Assembly, including the important news that "Happy Hour Clubs" are the latest Rotary craze. Someone should tell the powers-that-be that ours is a "Happy 90 minutes club." Congrats to Chris for graduating from the Newest Nine.

Wally also announced several changes in Rotary procedures, including changes in classification guidelines, make-up policy, an end to the one club-per-city limitation, and newly permitted membership transfer among clubs. There are many other changes; see Wally for the list.

Ron Cooper recognized Fullerton School District food service employees; over 8,000 meals are served daily. Our club's generosity was acknowledged by Dick Mathewson (grants to teachers to help "At Risk" kids), Kathy Allred-Blake (contribution to Women's Transitional Living Center to beef-up security, as explained by former member Ric Vedborg), and Lee Brockett (gift to the Boy Scouts).

Wally alerted us that Al Triay was recently admitted to the hospital, but is now home and doing well. We look forward to having you back next week, Al!

Mark Zane was proclaimed Rotarian of the Week for his programming efforts. Unfortunately, Ken Kaisch, aka "The Mad Russian," and self-proclaimed "Grand Poobah of Hoo-hah," usurped Jim Blackburn's finemaster duties. Thanks to Kathy Allred-Blake for giving us a brief but very expensive respite while introducing her "Red Hat Society." Prez Wally promised that Ken would not be finemaster next week.

Bill Hite's raffle ticket was selected, but he isn't an expert in mass murder. (Who picked that question?) Thanks for Julianne Haynes for contributing $10.

This week's program was a fine presentation by Buck Catlin's guest, Tom Dalton. Tom is a member of the Fullerton Heritage group, a volunteer organization dedicated to fostering cultural appreciation of and preserving historic architecture in Fullerton. Tom showed slides of many of Fullerton's architectural treasures. His group has been able to obtain National Register status for several important buildings, including the Santa Fe Depot, Union Pacific Depot, Farmers & Merchants Bank, Chapman Building, Masonic Lodge, Muckenthaler Cultural Center, Hetebrink House, and Heritage House. For more information, see the group's website at www.fullertonheritage.org. Rick Crane will bring membership applications to future meetings.

Wally closed the meeting by observing that golf brings out whatever larceny may exist in the hearts of men. Women, too, we presume!
